Herbal Cough Syrup
During cold/flu/RSV/Covid/pneumonia/
bronchitis season, few things are more welcomed than a soothing remedy for cough! Our Herbal Cough Syrup is crafted using traditional herbal syrup making methods; and the recipe itself, is modeled after the work of Stephen Buhner.
Calling on the expectorant, antispasmodic, antiviral, antibacterial, decongestant, anti-inflammatory, and demulcent action of some of the most potent plant allies, in most cases, one can expect near immediate relief from the unwanted symptoms of a wet or dry (stuck mucous) cough.
Here on Farm, and within our community, we use this Herbal Cough Syrup to not only soothe a wet or dry cough, but to clear the upper & lower respiratory tract; to dispel stuck mucous deep in the chest; to soothe and calm a spasm-like/whooping-like cough; to ease painful cough; reduce coughing all together; to soothe irritated mucous membranes; and to bring overall healing to the lungs & entire respiratory system.
GIFTS OF THE HERBS:
—Horehound Leaf (Marrubium vulgare)
• Role in Cough Support: Horehound is a wonderful expectorant used to clear mucus from the lungs. It’s especially helpful for productive, wet coughs where there is excess phlegm. Horehound stimulates the release of mucus, helping to clear the respiratory tract and ease coughing. It also has bitter properties that can stimulate digestion and circulation, indirectly aiding detoxification and lung health.
• Active Constituents: Marrubiin, flavonoids, tannins
• Actions: Expectorant, bitter tonic, antispasmodic
—Wild Cherry Bark (Prunus serotina)
• Role in Cough Support: Wild cherry bark is a highly regarded antitussive (cough suppressant) that works by calming the cough reflex. It’s particularly useful for dry, irritating coughs that cause throat irritation or interfere with sleep. Wild cherry also has antispasmodic properties, helping to ease bronchial spasms and soothe the respiratory system.
• Active Constituents: Cyanogenic glycosides (prunasin), tannins, flavonoids
• Actions: Antitussive, astringent, antispasmodic, calming
—Elderberries (Sambucus nigra)
• Role in Cough Support: Elderberries are rich in antiviral and immune-boosting properties, making them perfect in the case of coughs caused by viral infections, such as with influenza, corona viruses, or the common cold. Elderberries also help reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract and are high in antioxidants, which help support overall immune function and reduce oxidative stress.
• Active Constituents: Anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, vitamin C
• Actions: Antiviral, antioxidant, immune stimulant
—Elecampane Root (Inula helenium)
• Role in Cough Support: Elecampane is a strong expectorant and antimicrobial herb that helps to clear mucus from the lungs, especially in chronic bronchitis or wet coughs.
